Arsenal are looking to put pen to paper with Bayern
Munich’s Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo this week, while Arsene
Wenger is reportedly still holding out for Luis Suarez.
France youth international striker Yaya Sanogo, who arrived on a free from Auxerre, is Wenger’s only transfer so far, and the manager has admitted his squad is “a little bit thin”.
Gustavo would be an ideal replacement for Alex Song, who left for Barcelona last season.
According to reports in Germany, new Bayern boss Pep Guardiola does not consider the 26-year-old Brazilian international as part of his plans.
Gustavo fell below Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez in the central midfield pecking order at Bayern last season – with Thiago Alcantara arriving recently too – and he has made it known he is keen to leave.
Wenger is under pressure to sign some new players, with a reported transfer budget of £70- million still to spend.
With Gustavo on international duty, Arsenal would need the permission of the Brazil FA to start negotiations for a rush deal.
However, recent reports in German newspaper Kicker suggest Gustavo may stay in the Bundesliga with a move to Wolfsburg.
Where Suarez is concerned, the Gunners have already had two offers for the Uruguayan turned down, but according to the Guardian, they are preparing a third offer.
